One thousand dollar ($1000) a month is twelve thousand dollar ($12000) a year. It made a lot of difference for Thompson just by making a decision to unlimit himself.
We usually do not see ourselves as Limited Liability Expert (LLE) but that is the life majority live. We take responsibility only to the extent of our investment in ourselves. We go to school, get a certificate and begin to search for opportunities ourselves. This is normal. This is what most people do. Individual tends to operate in a space or region of their limited personal experience and exposure.
Thompson later acknowledged his limitations and learnt that we can invest in those above us. If we did, they will be restless until we succeed.
We were in the United States Space and Rocket Center being subjected to space simulation by astronauts and one of the ambassadors of the space programme had just delivered a presentation. I could not hold it because I was inspired. I went to her and said, “Madam, I will like to be mentored by you”. That was it. She accepted and the conversation began.
Few months later, I received an information to produce few minutes video of impact about my mentor which was needed by the Television station in her home country Romania for broadcast. The sacrifice cost me some dollars and I did the best I could do.
Exactly one week afterwards, there came an electronic mail requesting my application to be part of 48 educators from 39 countries selected to participate in educator training at The European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland with the largest Hydron collider. Unbelievable!
My mentor from Romania did send the electronic mail. We need experience and exposure of others to move faster than just operating as Limited Liability Guru (LLG).
Back to Thompson’s story. He got employed alongside a colleague. They became friends. And in a casual conversation even though some organizations are uncomfortable about employees sharing such information, Thompson found out his colleague with the same title and job descriptions was earning $12,000.00 more. Rather than being resentful, he humbled self and asked how did it happen.
Let me paraphrase the conversation:
Thompson: How did you do it?
Thompson’s colleague: Well, I hired a career coach to prepare me for the interview.
Hmm, from time to time we blame organization and employer for underpaying us when we are the problem.
We are blind to our excess value. Think about earning growth from #90,000 to #250,000 or a situation of #150,000 to #340,000 or a transition from classroom to global education consultant, these are all remarkable stories of teachers who cared enough for mentorship.
Everything of great value is encrusted. You just have to uncover it.
