DRUM OF HONOUR IN MY FAVOUR

Abdulhamid Hassan- The teacher with a difference

Dear Friend,

DRUM OF HONOUR IN MY FAVOUR

Yes, by obeying certain principles, the world would decide to beat the drum of honour in your favour.

I received a letter from Abdulhamid from a rural community in Kano state Nigeria. He wrote:

Sir, May Allah bless you on what you trained us in this regard and aspect of connecting our classrooms to global audience.

Sir, we really appreciate it……. thanks so much

Abdulhamid Hassan.”

Congratulations Abdulhamid!

This milestone achievement to command global attention for Abdulhamid was an unrealistic dream some years back considering his context. Let me share some background about Abdulhamid Hassan and how he has grown professionally due to changes he made to his work ethic, pedagogy, teaching and learning philosophy before he caught the attention of global audience.

Abdulhamid teaches densely populated classrooms in a village 2 hours drive from the airport. An environment of resources deficit, ineffective learning feedback due to overpopulated classrooms and popularized lecture method of delivery.

He had to change a few things. He had no idea of what an inclusive classroom looked like and how it could be achieved until he was exposed to best practice teaching models for example, multiple means of engagement, multiple means representation and multiple means of expression that cater to the needs of individual learners.

He was exposed to core skills or twenty-first century skills known as deep learning skills and how to embed these skills in teaching and learning.

After fourteen weeks of implementation, feedback and reflection, he had collections of impact stories from learners, school community that featured in sub-Saharan Africa magazine.

Abdulhamid is now a mentor to other teachers in his community, an ambassador of core skills delivery and advocate of global classroom best practices. It does not matter where you are located on the globe, if your work is global, society beats drum of honour to your doorstep.

His commitment to mentorship paved the way and he closed the skill gap between what we learnt in schools to qualify as educators and what society needs. I challenge you to consider seeking formal mentorship as one of your professional goals for 2023.
